Archbishop intervenes in death row Brit case

Most Revd Justin Welby said he was unable to take on the case of Lindsay Sandiford, 58, who has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of smuggling cocaine into Bali.

She claims she was forced to carry the drugs on a flight from Bangkok in 2012 by a gang who threatened her family.

The grandmother from North Yorkshire wrote to the archbishop from her cell at a high security prison in the country describing her "terrible position".

In a response to the letter from Archbishop Justin's Chief of Staff, Kay Brock, the woman was told Lambeth Palace had been in touch with the embassy in Jakarta.

The letter said the consulate in Bali would help the woman but that because of the number of death penalty cases it was not possible for the archbishop to take up campaigning on her behalf.

The leader of Anglicans remains opposed to the death penalty, the letter added.
