In a Facebook post his sister Sandra said the 72 year old was responding well to medication after having a heart attack last week.
He's still thought to be on a life support machine.
"The medical team has given some encouraging news and we are so grateful for the many thousands of people who are praying on behalf of my brother," his sister said.
"With the continued medical attention and your prayers, we are trusting the Lord for a full recovery."
The songwriter and producer who is inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame has recently faced various health problems, including diabetes and cancer.
He and his sister are pastors at the New Christ Memorial Church in San Fernando, California.
