American bishop charged with cyclist death

Episcopal Bishop Heather Cook is accused of killing Thomas Palermo on December 27 by knocking him down in Baltimore.

The state alleges the 58-year-old was drunk when she hit the man and if found guilty she faces 20 years in prison.

She was the chosen as the Diocese of Maryland's first female Episcopal Bishop last year but Church officials have now asked for her resignation.

It's claimed the bishop initially left the scene of the accident before later returning to admit her guilt.

Since the incident she has been in a treatment facility and a trial date is yet to be set.

More details of the bishop's past have emerged in recent days including allegations that she was drunk at a pre-consecration dinner two nights before she was made a bishop.

Court papers show Heather Cook was charged with drink driving in 2010.

She's yet to make a plea.
