A round-up of Christians named in the 2019 Honours list - and what they said

Long-serving Conservative politician Gary Streeter (pictured below) said he was "deeply honoured" to be awarded a knighthood.

He said: "I want to dedicate the award to my wife and family for supporting me through the last quarter of a century at Westminster."

Church of England clergywoman and chief executive of the Post Office, Rev Paula Anne Vennells was appointed CBE for services to the Post Office and to charity.

Claire Mary Little from the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre in Hampshire was appointed MBE - as was the senior pastor of Highway of Holiness Church in Haringey, Alexander Gyasi.

Stephen Addison (pictured below), a Christian former gangster who trains youngsters in boxing to deter them from crime, has been awarded the British Empire Medal.

Other recipients include Mike Andrea, the founder of the Global Generation Church in Margate, who has been helping homeless people secure jobs and housing.

Describing his British Empire Award as a "win for the whole Church", Mike (pictured below) told Premier: "People say that the Church is in decline, people say that the Church isn't active in society.

"Yet, so many honours this year have been given to church leaders, staff members of Christian initiatives where they're engaging in the real issue of poverty. That absolutely thrills me."

In total, 1,148 people were included in the 2019 New Year list.

Women represent 47 per cent of the total (544), the lowest percentage in five years.

Susan Ann Mackenzie (pictured above) from the Girls' Brigade in Inverness was appointed OBE for services to young people.

"So honoured" were the words former director of the Evangelical Alliance Joel Edwards used to describe the news he becomes a CBE.

Dean of Manchester Very Rev Rogers Govender said he was "very humbled" to be appointed MBE.

Rev Timothy John Hurren was recognised for services to the Church and the community in North Yorkshire.

Rev Janet Lesley Jackson was honoured for her support of bereaved families in North East England.
