24,000 weapons off the streets thanks to Christian charity

by Hannah Tooley

Mike Smith MBE, founder of Word 4 Weapons, told Premier that he is overwhelmed with the achievement.

He said he is "very proud that this happened, because it means that when I heard that call in my head, when I believed that God told me what to do, it was the right thing to do and to act on it.

"I believe that can only get better, I believe that there will be more bins out there so the whole of the UK will feel much safer."

There are 30 knife bins across Greater London and the West Midlands away from CCTV so that people can anonymously dispose of a weapon.

Mike Smith said everybody makes mistakes and should be given a second chance: "We go by what our faith tells us, and our Christian faith tells us you should forgive somebody 70 x 7 - that's what Jesus said.

"We know there is the law, and the law needs to be adhered to, but that doesn't mean that because someone has done something wrong that's it, we lock them up and bang them away for the rest of their life.

"We need to understand that they need to be intergrated into society."

He told Premier his prayer going forward is to totally eliminate knife and gun crime, to ensure young people live fulfilled lives and that bereaved families begin to heal.
